Knit knack paddy wack

As I mentioned in my last post, I’ve been knitting frantically for the past week or so. It began with trying to use up my rather large stash of acrylic which has been doing nothing more than sitting in a box in my room. It’s now progressed into my longest knitting phase ever!

Knitted Scarf

This particular creation I am going to call “The Blackberry Scarf”. Simply because the stitch (moss stitch for anyone interested) reminds me of a blackberry. The colour on this photo (or the other one) isn’t quite accurate because it’s more purple, but the short days now make it virtually impossible to photograph anything by natural light, so this is the best I can do. Anyway, it just needs finishing off and then it will become a birthday present for a friend. The only problem seems to be the length because I don’t seem to have enough yarn left… oops! But it seems to be long enough to be worn in the fashion shown, so I’m hoping she won’t mind.

circular knitting tryout

This my chums, is a little experiment. I should say that I’m not the most experienced knitter because I have a habit of going through knitting phases, whereby I knit like crazy for a week then go a few months doing nothing, ergo I do not progress more than knit & purl. Anyway, on this latest knitting bug, I decided I’d try out knitting in the round. On double pointed needles no less. To go even further in my experiment, I decided I’d try stranded knitting, which is a technique used to create 2 colour patterns. I’m trying out a houndstooth pattern! Clearly, this is still a WIP, so I’ll update you as to how it goes at a later time.

vint pattern 2Sadly, whilst my knitting bug has rendered me venturing into other areas, the jumper I started many moons ago is untouched in the knitting bag. I blame it on my needles being too short, so I’ll have to hunt down some longer ones before I can continue. The tip I was told at the SnB group last time I went was to use a circular needle, so I may get one of those instead. I’ll show you progress on that pattern at a later date. It is in fact fairly straightforward once you get to grips with it.

Anyway, those are my knitting antics. Knitters out there, what projects have you been working on? And for those who don’t know how to knit, I recommend trying it out! You may not like it, but you’ll never know until you try!

Over and out.

I love the blackberry scarf. Moss stitch is lovely. I was in knitting club when I was 12, but I never really learned any stitches or anything, so I can only make the most basic of scarves.

I love that scarf!! What size needles did you use?

Ooh well done!
I only know how to do the one, simple stich/knit, I don’t even know what it’s called?!
I’ve knitted two scarves before but I’d love to learn more. That moss stitch looks lovely.

I love the colour of your scarf! I’m also busy with knitting a scarf, but it’s taking loads of time. Still not finished after about 3 weeks

Amelia - Stitches are super simple to do because they just involve combinations of knit & purl. Once you know how to do those, you are away!

Jasmine - I used 8mm needles and had to double up the wool yarn because it wasn’t chunky enough for the needles.

Jade - Garter stitch I believe is the name for plain knitting. I suggest just following some patterns of things you’d like to make. That & reading the odd book is the best way of learning more.

Sam - Thankyou! I just hope my friend likes it too. Knitting does take ages! I long to get to the stage where I can knit a scarf in a few days (or hours!) like my grandma can.

When I was little I used to watch my aunt knit sweaters and thought she was the cleverest person on earth to be able to create something like that all by herself! One day I stole her knitting ’sticks’ and played fencing with my brother with them - she was really mad when she found out.. well, that was the last time I ever touched one of those things. But yes you’re right, I should really learn. I’m still trying to learn how to sew at the moment, I’m quite obsessed with buttons and I’ve just started a small collection so I can button-ise lots of things (yeah I’m lame, that’s the only thing I half-know how to do in terms of sewing now) Ha ha
