Bag me a jacket

I just thought I’d share with you what I’ve been working on lately. One of the many projects I line up for myself but take too much time finishing.

Recycled bag (detail)

This was formerly a jacket I bought from the Yellow Vintage Shop in Birmingham (now apparently called Cow?) around a year ago, for the rather extortionate price of £15. I have no idea what possessed me because it was a hideous 80s jacket complete with shoulder pads and a funny elasticated waist. But something about the deep salmon lace, gold buttons and black leather style material (it’s too flimsy to be real leather, but I have no idea what it actually is) appealed to me in that “ooh, I can do something with that” way. So, almost a year on from buying it, I have created… a bag!

Not just any bag, a rather fabby bag if I do say so myself. Gone are the hideous shoulder pads and in their place are plaited gold bag straps. As you can tell, I still need to line it and strengthen the handles somehow, but it looks like a bag and functions like a bag and that’s good enough for me to show you (I’ll take another photo when it’s done, so you can see it in all it’s glory). My school days will be cheered immensely now that I have this to cart my books around!

That lace is very timely!

wow, you did a great job! very clever! x

This looks amazing! i want to learn how to do this =(

Thankyou folks. It looks even better now that I’ve finished it! I shall post some photos this weekend.

@ oaktree: I’ll try & do a mini tutorial sometime soon. The jacket will have to be different of course, but the basic steps there (it’s pretty straightforward actually) and you can try it out yourself.

Thank you! i really appreciate it :)

My blog address has also changed as to the address posted here :)

This looks great, I love the lace too.

this makes me want to go on a quest for a sick leather jacket to turn into a bag.
truely lovely.
