Another source of fabric
Other than tasty home-cooked Indian food everyday, the other benefit of being Asian is access to my grandma’s unwanted saris (there are of course other perks, but we’ll stick to those for now).

Unwanted saris from the grandmother
Basically, a sari is just a really long length of material which is wrapped in a certain way around the body so as to provide a dress. In all honestly, I don’t wear them because although they can be pretty, I’m just not a ‘pretty’ kind of person (and I always feel really uncomfortable in Indian attire). Saris come in an array of colours, prints, designs, fabrics… I shalln’t go on because I don’t follow Indian fashion (I barely follow fashion in general) and it’d just be wrong for me to continue.
Anyway, as with all items, they fall in and out of [the owner’s] personal style and thus become abandoned. Festooning at the bottom of a wardrobe. I’m sure the odd Asian (just to clarify, in Britain, Asian tends to mean people of Indian/Bangladeshi/Pakistani etc descent - even though it’s illogical to exclude other nations because Asia is so vast) woman would clear out and if they’re aware of charity shops possibly give them away. What’s more likely to happen is that the saris stock-pile up until the next visit to India or similar and are then dished out to family there, where they probably will be appreciated - though not as much as a cardigan from M&S (don’t ask me why, I’ve never got this myself)

Sari prints I particularly liked
I’m one of those “one (wo)man’s rubbish is another (wo)man’s treasure” type people so to me, it seems an awful waste to have these many metres (or yards, whatever you work in) of amazing fabrics just sitting idle whilst waiting for that long trip back to where they more than likely were made anyway. With that in mind (and my general ‘thrift’ nature at le moment) I asked my grandma for any of her old saris. I could only see a few yesterday, because they were hard to get to, but of those, some were lovely. I have no idea what I’m going to make yet, but as I’m a hoarder, they’ll just sit around and stare at me until I think of something.
