Latest finds: Sewing, the old way
I’m one of those people who always thinks it would have been amazing to live in the past (I mean late 1800s/early 1900s). Overlooking the fact that things are never quite how you imagine them to be, I think this may be the reason why I love all things old. Be it clothes, fashion or random objects; it’s pretty much the older it is the more interesting I find it.
So, yesterday’s charity shop hunt didn’t go quite according to plan, in that I didn’t go to quite as many places as I originally intended. However, in the first area I visited, there was one charity shop which sells old furniture & objects as well as clothing. Upon entering, I looked at one item of furniture before my eye caught sight of an old singer sewing machine. It had no price on it and thinking that I really would never be able to get it home, I had a look around the rest of the shop.
Of course, once you see something amazing, everything else seems quite sober. Having wandered over for a closer look, a lady informed me that it still worked and it was £5. All reasoning flew out of the window at that point. The fact that I had no idea how to use it, the fact that I couldn’t get it home, the fact that it was manual and would take ages to make anything - none of that mattered when it was such a bargain. Needless to say, I bought it.

Honestly, I got it because it was pretty and back to my original point - it was that old aesthetic that I constantly desire. After a bit of research on the internet (ah the joys) I discovered that it was made in 1873 (unless I got it wrong), which amazes me immensely.
I don’t think I’m one of those people who buy antiques because of their monetary worth - I just love the idea that this object has lived through all the things I imagine the past to be. The idea that it has been loved and used by many people in the past. And for that reason, I am intrigued by it (I actually haven’t been this excited by an object since finding a pocket watch at a car boot sale) - I LOVE BARGAIN HUNTING!!

Wow!
I use my grandma’s/dad’s sewing machine (frister rossman) which is electric, but I’d love to know how to use the singer. Manually I mean - I don’t see the point of making it electric when I have an electric already (plus there is no fun in that!)
